Economic Development
|
The Town of Canso is fortunate
to work with agencies such as
the Guysborough Regional
Development Authority and Team
Guysborough to promote economic
development in Canso. A recent
success story is the new call
centre, Doppleganger Canso Inc.
(DCI). On March 26th 2003,
Minster of Economic Development
Cecil Clarke, announced a 25-50
seat call centre, which will be
located in the Canso Enterprise
Centre (CEC). The CEC is a newly
renovated nineteenth century
brink building that will house
DCI, along with offices for
technology ventures and
government services. The Town is
also working to develop its
tourism sector. The Stan Rogers
Folk Festival is an
international festival that
takes place in Canso annually.
Check out the Stan Fest site for
details and ticket information.
Besides Stan Fest, the Town has
a variety of eco-tourism based
offerings. See the Visitor
Information link for details.

Wind Energy
The Town of Canso and Renewable Energy
Services Limited (RESL) have partnered to
make the Gold Coast wind energy project a
reality in Canso. The mission of RESL is two
fold: “To provide a profitable, clean and
sustainable source of energy now and for our
future generations” and to “Build a
profitable and sustainable economy through
the stimulation of local equity investment
in our provincial economy”. The Town of
Canso aims to be a model community, by
joining with RESL to explore the possibility
of providing green energy to the market in
Nova Scotia and possibly purchasing green
power from the Gold Coast Project for its
own use.
The aim of the Gold Coast Project is to
generate approximately 5.2MW of wind power.
The project will displace over nine thousand
tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The
project will also increase the environmental
effectiveness of the Town of Canso’s Water
Utility and wastewater facilities by opening
up the possibility of the Town purchasing
green power to operate its water and
wastewater plants.
RESL and the Town of Canso have been
working together on the Gold Coast Project
since the year 2001. A Memorandum of
Understanding has been signed and fifteen
months of wind data has been gathered. The
goal of the project is to see turbines
generating power in Canso by the end of
2004.
